Stone Fish Sonnet

28 Jan

The fish of stone gapes like an ear:

a cave half-full of dark water,

stagnant and still.

The goldfish make “O”s with their mouths,

until their food is scattered

and they become brave,

but not in that cave,

so silent and chill.

When the kookaburras laugh,

loud and clear,

the stone fish listens

for all she can hear

and she waits

and listens

and waits

in water so smooth,

the sky will appear

as jigsaw pieces,

and very soon after,

when the kookaburras cease their laughter,

the shattered pieces will all disappear,

as bright goldfish rush, as if they were

sure of sanctuary

in the stone fish maw.
