the apple picker’s day

28 Mar

dew on the web
or is it rain
apple crates to fill

muddy feet
drenching rain
keeps my cider cool

salt on my cheek
mother and daughter
share a raincoat

noisy bird
enticing me
no-one else

day ends
scent of earth and apple
in my wash basin

the spider’s web
is deserted
watch out little moth

apple cider
this drafty barn
sings lullabies

Simple, controlled and beautifully evocative; makes me think of Thomas Hardy’s description of cider-pressing in ‘The Woodlanders’, or Copland’s ‘Appalachian Spring’. Really enjoyed this.
