120117 the mouths of clowns

17 Jan

horses undulate and
orbit pulsing lights and sounds.
only the painter sees the paint.

faded echoes of my heart
beat recall the clown’s
mouth swaggerers

and only the poet
hears
the floss of singing songs on a stick
smells
the ecstasy of romance doused in
embarrassed chuckling

while the oscillating clown
mouth selects a loved
unwanted prize

revellers, eventually,
(here, my love, is the lasting laugh)
find nothing else is left at all.

A beautiful poem, well written with stark images. Thank you. Ethel Mortenson Davis
