120130 we won

03 Feb

the crowd funnels through
corrugated gates complains
grins, shuffles, smokes,
smells of oil, beer

on dad’s knee, rubbing my
knees warm. tea and
fresh cake
biscuits to dunk

tales that change my
memories and I
put them away much better
understand what I saw better

I enjoyed this: it’s short and quick, but it expands into a full canvas and leaves something behind to think about: there’s nostalgia, affection, a social picture, but also something about the way we reconstruct our memories. I like those little details: just enough of them, and sufficiently precise, to do a man-sized job.
But that scene is surely of life in the UK, not sunny Oz!

Thanks very much for your kind words, John.
      and … Up the Albion!
