Chapel of Rest

19 Jan

on the breakfast table the screen goes dark
his spirit rides in on a beam of sunlight
when I open my eyes again he is
looking at me from the computer screen
I smile his smile, and he smiles back at me
when the sunlight leaves, he leaves with it,
and I hit the keyboard to write another email
we view his body in the chapel of rest

I sat on his knee while he spoke to me
about the football match we’d seen
and he smacked me when I took my brother
to the circus instead of to Sunday School
the trouble with having a father is
they don’t live happily ever after
